Jordan Spieth takes lead heading into the weekend

February 11-14
Pebble Beach Golf Links, Pebble Beach, California
Spyglass Hill Golf Course, Pebble Beach, California
$7,800,000
Round 1, Round 3, Round 4

Jordan Spieth is back on top of the leaderboard for the second week running after shooting a 5-under 67 at Spyglass Hill.

“A little bit improved off last week, which was the goal this week, to just try and feel like I’m getting better each day,” said Spieth. “I haven’t made a ton of longer putts… which is probably a really good sign that I’m keeping the ball in front of me and striking it really nicely.”

Spieth hasn’t won since the 2017 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale and his 12-under 132 this week is his first 36-hole lead since.

“I like where things are at,” said Spieth.

Daniel Berger, playing Pebble Beach, made the turn in 35 following two birdies and a bogey but made three birdies and an eagle on the back nine to close with a 66, one shot behind Spieth.

“I didn’t make a bunch of birdies in the middle of the round and then hung in there and toward the end rattled off a couple and got myself in a good position going into Saturday,” said Berger.

Henrik Norlander fired three birdies and a bogey for a 70 at Spyglass Hill to take third place at 135.

First round leader Patrick Cantlay, who tied the course record of 62 on Thursday, opened with a double bogey at the 10th and recovered with two birdies before another bogey at the 17th, a birdie at the 2nd followed by another bogey at the 3rd led to a 73 and a tie for fourth place alongside Tom Lewis and Paul Casey at 9-under.

Casey, tired after a 40 hour journey and a 12-hour time difference from the Middle East, has played well in Monterey so far with rounds of 68 and 67.

His form has been good recently and he put a mentally tough 2020 behind him with a win in Dubai two weeks ago.

“I feel like the goals that I’ve set are now kind of attainable, and I’m on the right trajectory to start ticking those off. So I feel great. The energy is good because of that. I’m excited. I’m loving my golf.”

Phil Mickelson, a five-time winner of the event, will miss another cut after a tough round at Pebble Beach that featured four bogeys and two double bogeys at the 14th and 18th where he hit two balls into the ocean, offset by only two birdies to close with an 80 at 10-over par.

Rickie Fowler, who has not hat a top-10 finish since January 2020, will also miss the cut for the second consecutive week after a 75.
