Jordan Spieth produced a very average round with four bogeys and three birdies until he holed out from 160 yards for eagle at the par-4 16th at Pebble Beach, signed for a 71 and regained the lead by two shots.

“In the air I thought it was going to be really good, it was one of the only shots I kind of said, ‘Oh, be good,'" Spieth said of his eagle. “And as it landed it was just exactly where I was trying to hit it, certainly a bonus for it to drop… It's a good lesson to learn for tomorrow: how quickly things can change out here.”

Spieth benefitted from a later start and avoided the rain and harsh wind along the ocean holes that he'd predicted would lead to a difficult day at Pebble Beach.

Behind Spieth in second place are Nate Lashley (68), Tom Hoge (68), Patrick Cantlay (70), Daniel Berger (72) and Russell Knox (69).

Berger was tied with Spieth at 13-under until his drive at the 18th went right onto the cart path and settled near the hedges. An official was called for a measurement but it was determined to be just out of bounds and Berger had to sette for a double bogey and a 72 for the day.

Cantlay started his round with an eagle at the par-5 2nd hole but finished with a 70 after producing two birdies and as many bogeys on the back nine.

Behind them in sevent are Jason Day (68), Brian Stuard (69), Maverick McNealy (69) and Paul Casey (71).

Kevin Streelman shot the lowest round of the day with a bogey-free 67.
