AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am R4

Daniel Berger wins fourth PGA title

February 11-14
Pebble Beach Golf Links, Pebble Beach, California
Spyglass Hill Golf Course, Pebble Beach, California
$7,800,000
Round 1, Round 2, Round 3

Daniel Berger started his final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am with an eagle at the par-4 second hole and made four birdies and a single bogey at the par-4 8th to reach the par-5 18th tied for the lead and needing a birdie to win.

Having gone out of bounds with his drive there on Saturday he determined he was going down swinging. He hit a driver into the fairway and followed it with a 3-wood from 253 yards to 30 feet.before sinking a tricky putt for his fourth eagle of the tournament to finish with a 65 at 18-under for his fourth PGA title.

“I’ve been in this situation before, coming down the last hole, having to hit a good shot,” said Berger. “Sometimes it goes your way, sometimes it doesn’t, but you really have to be bold, and I feel like I did that today.

“I think the biggest thing is playing fearlessly. You can step up there and be concerned with all the different outcomes and all the different places that ball can go, but in the end it’s just golf, it’s just a golf shot and if you can step up there and kind of free your mind and be fearless, then you have such a better opportunity to hit a good shot.”

“To step up there and hit a great drive and then one of the best 3-woods I’ve ever hit in my life, and then to make that putt is just as good as it gets for me,” said Berger.

Maverick McNealy produced five birdies on the back nine for a 66 and finished second, his best result on Tour so far.

“I had the adrenaline pumping coming down the stretch there and feelings that I hadn’t really felt on the golf course in a little while, trying to close this out and give myself a chance,” said McNealy.

Having started his round with a two-shot lead, Jordan Spieth bogeyed the par-4 3rd and par-3 5th and made two birdies on the front nine to make the turn in 36. He fired another bogey at the par-5 14th and three more birdies to close with a 70 and tied for third place at 15-under alongside first round leader Patrick Cantlay who closed with a 68.

“Really it was just a really poor first six holes. And out here, that’s where you can score,” said Spieth. “I needed to be a couple under through six, and I was 1-over. And really, that was the difference.”

Nate Lashley, leader at 16-under after a birdie at the 11th, was tied for the lead with Berger with three holes to play when he missed the green from 152 yards at the 16th and four-putted from 13 feet for a triple bogey. He closed with a 69 and tied for fifth with Paul Casey.
