Laurie Canter started the day two shots behind the lead at the Bapco Energies Bahrain Championship and fired a bogey-free round featuring an eagle at the par-4 6th and a single birdie for a 69 to set the clubhouse target at 14-under.
Pablo Larrazábal looked set to overtake Canter with three birdies in a flawless round when he missed his six-foot par putt at the 18th for bogey to set up a playoff also joined by England’s Daniel Brown who also made three birdies and a bogey.
Canter birdied the first extra hole to win his second DP World Tour title while Brown and Larrazábal both bogeyed to finish second.
“I’m so chuffed to have stuck in there,” said the Englishman. “It’s unfortunate what happened to Pablo but I’m absolutely delighted to have stuck in and got another win.
“A lot of the stuff I’ve kind of stumbled on at the beginning of this year, being part of that Team Cup and listening to a few of the speakers and people, how they deal with pressure.
“So I just said ‘we’ve got a job to do here and let’s really knuckle into what we’re trying to do, hit some quality shots under pressure’ And I did that great. The two swings I made in the play-off were super and then sort of limped the putt in so it was nice to win with a three.”
Scotland’s Richie Ramsay carded a bogey-free 68 to finish in a tie for fourth place at 13-under alongside France’s Martin Couvra (70) as well as Spain’s Ivan Cantero (69) and David Puig who fired nine birdies and a bogey for a 64.
Overnight leader Callum Tarren of England made three birdies and four bogeys for a 73 and finished T8 at 12-under.
