Bryson DeChambeau narrowly missed out on a 59 when he missed his birdie putt on the final hole in what could have been the thirteenth sub-60 round on the PGA Tour.

BMW Championship 2021 R2

“I hit it on the line, just misread it. We played it two and a half, three inches out, and it clearly didn't break that much, but I had good speed on it and I'll go look afterwards and see if I pulled it or not and work on ways to mitigate that.”

A record-tying 58 even looked possible after his second eagle at the par-5 16th, instead he had to settle for a career-best 60 and the 36-hole lead at 16-under at the BMW Championship.

“It was one of the better ones of my career," he said of his eagle. "We judged the flier lie perfectly. I hit an 8-iron from 250, maybe it was more than that, I don't know, but it was downwind, and we just wanted to get to that back little knob where maybe it could feed off and where if it goes over, I'm still OK.

“It fed off I think perfectly. Again, a little bit of luck. You have to have a little bit to luck to be playing that well out there.”

In spite of the missed opportunity, DeChambeau was pleased with his round overall.

“A lot of putts went in. A lot of things went right. We got a lot of great numbers out of the rough today, and I played my butt off and never thought too much about anything until the last few holes.

“I striped a 9-iron on 17, striped a drive, striped a wedge on 18 and just wasn't able to clutch those putts up. But I stroked it pretty well today and I'm going to go work on that a little bit and make sure I'm hitting it down my lines for this weekend, so I have myself a chance to win.”

The second round was delayed due to thunderstorms and some players had yet to finish when play was suspended due to darkness.

World number 1 Jon Rahm and Patrick Cantlay (63) are tied in second place at 15-under with three holes to play for Rahm.

“Today I hit it better all the way through and also putted really well,” said Cantlay. “I thought I played great, 9 under, I'm very pleased. But obviously, there was lower than that out there today."

Sungjae Im and Sergio Garcia share fourth place at 12-under after rounds of 65 and 67 respectively.

Sam Burns, who co-led after the first round alongside Rahm and Rory McIlroy, is in a tie for sixth place at 11-under with one hole still to play. McIlroy fired a 70 and is tied in eighth one shot further behind.
