Patrick Cantlay made an 18-foot birdie putt at the sixth extra hole to win the BMW Championship on Sunday.

"I played really well all week. At the beginning of the week I didn't realize it would take that many under par to just force a playoff. But I hit a lot of good shots today, and it was just enough."

Cantlay has now won three times this season, the only player to do so, and moves to the top of the FedEx Cup standings and has a two-shot lead in the Tour Championship. He also gets the final automatic place on the U.S. Ryder Cup team.

Americans Cantlay and DeChambeau, who were tied in the lead overnight and playing together, both signed for final round 66s. DeChambeau looked set to win after taking a one shot lead at the 16th, especially as Cantlay found the water at the 17th and bogeyed the hole. But DeChambeau also bogeyed and could only par the final hole while Cantlay made birdie setting up the playoff.

"It was a grind," said Cantlay. "It was way more holes than I thought I was going to play today, but it was more of what we've seen all week. The golf course was easy, so you needed to make a bunch of putts and make a bunch of birdies, and I did."

Both finished at 27-under 261, a difficult score for DeChambeau as no one shooting that score had ever lost on Tour previously.

South Korea's Sungjae Im came third at 23-under after a final round 67 followed by Rory McIlroy who also shot 67 for fourth place one shot further behind.

"It's been a good week," said McIlroy. "A lot more encouraging than last week at the Northern Trust. Played better. I got off to a better start. I think that's the thing, as well; Pete Cowan has always been on me about if you start tournaments well, you'll do well. It was nice to play a good first round this week and sort of build off of that and not really be trying to play catch-up all the time.

BMW Championship 2021 R4

"But yeah, it was a really good week. I hit the ball well. I putted better with the old putter back in the bag.

"All I wanted to do was get to East Lake next week, and it's nice that I've moved up a few spots, as well, and probably start a couple of shots closer to the leader."

BMW Championship 2021 R4

South African Erik van Rooyen, who was 139th in the standings three week ago before winning the Barracuda Championship and finishing T7 at last week's the Northern Trust, finishes fifth this week with a final round 65 to reach 21-under. He moves up to 27th in the standings enabling him to go to the Tour Championship.

"It's my first full year on the PGA TOUR, and it was a goal of mine to get there," said van Rooryen/ "Like we just said, six weeks ago or so I wasn't even sniffing it. Just really proud of myself."

BMW Championship 2021 R4

Sergio Garcia finished tied for sixth place alongside Dustin Johnson and moves into the top 30 in the standings qualifying him for the Tour Championship for the first time since 2017.

"It's very exciting, " said Garcia. "Obviously after last week I put myself in a difficult spot, but showed a lot of guts this week. Played some great golf."
