Patrick Cantlay holed out for eagle from over a 100 yards at the par-5 14th to reach 6-under for the day before closing bogey-par for a 65 and a 12-under total to carry that lead into the final day.

"107, I think, a big lob wedge," he said of the eagle. "It was downwind and just got lucky and fed off the sleep perfect right in.

"I don't know the golf course too well. Obviously it's my first time here, so I've been on my wedge shots walking up to the green to see exactly where I wanted to land it, and landed it in basically the perfect spot."

A win on Sunday would make him the first back-to-back winner of the BMW Championship since the FedWx Cup began.

"My head is not even there right now. I think the best way to handle this playoff system is to just focus on doing your best in the tournament that you're in and not worry too much about the points. So that's what I'm going to do."

A shot behind at 11-under lie fellow Americans Xander Schauffele and Scott Stallings who both carded 66s.

Stallings started the event 46th in the FedEx Cup and is projected to move to 16th with the top 30 moving on to the final playoff event. He has played on the PGA Tour for twelve years and has never yet made it to the Tour Championship.

“That was my No. 1 goal to start the year,” he said.

Australian Adam Scott who led overnight carded a 69 to move down into a share of fourth place at 10-under alongside American Scottie Scheffler (68).
