Joe Dean secured his maiden DP World Tour title with a closing 63, winning the Husqvarna British Masters by three shots at The Belfry.

The 32-year-old Englishman began a long Sunday eight shots off the lead and made 11 birdies across 24 holes. His nine-birdie final round, the lowest score of the week, took him to 14-under and made him the first English winner of the event since 2021.

Nacho Elvira, Daniel Hillier, Niklas Nørgaard and Jacob Skov Olesen shared second place on 11-under. Marco Penge, Tom McKibbin and Thomas Rosenmueller finished another shot behind.

Dean overturns eight-shot deficit

Dean returned at 7am to complete the third round after weather delays left the leaders facing a long final day. Birdies at the par-five 15th and 17th helped him finish the round seven shots behind 54-hole leader Hillier.

He then surged into contention with birdies at the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th, turning in 32. Further gains followed at the 10th, 13th and 14th as his precise iron play repeatedly created scoring chances in the wind.

Dean two-putted for birdie at the 17th to draw level before hitting his approach to ten feet at the last. Penge bogeyed the 11th while Dean was preparing to putt, and the Sheffield golfer converted his final chance to establish a three-shot clubhouse lead.

Penge still had the par-five 15th and 17th available but could not close the gap. Dean waited with his wife and caddie, Emily, before his victory was confirmed.

“Today was one of the rare days where everything just felt right and the putts were dropping,” Dean said. “Almost like I couldn’t do anything wrong.”

A breakthrough after financial pressure

Dean was playing on the EuroPro Tour in 2022 and did not contest any ranking events the following year, despite earning his DP World Tour card through Qualifying School. A lack of funds delayed his debut until February 2024, and he continued working as a supermarket delivery driver while seeking help from a hypnotist for difficulties with international travel.

A runner-up finish in Kenya during his second start earned him almost €200,000. He placed second at the 2024 KLM Open and qualified for the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, while another runner-up result followed at last year’s Nexo Championship.

“All those painful hours and all the work I put into this, it’s finally led to something,” Dean said. “I can’t thank Emily enough for what she has to put up with with me.”

Hillier, the 2023 champion, closed with a 73 after playing the front nine in 39. Penge, who had taken a one-shot lead into the delayed third round, signed for a 72 as Dean completed the biggest win of his career.
