Adri Arnaus continued his brilliant run of scoring at Golf Costa Adeje with a second consecutive 64 to take the halfway lead at the 2021 Canary Islands Championship, on an emotional day for Spanish golf.

“I've been playing pretty smart. After six days of playing this golf course, you know which spots are better than others."

“I like courses that make you think. I get myself into good positions and I enjoy that a lot. Even though the par fives seem reachable you still have to think. All that makes me go out there and try to play my best and it seems like I'm doing pretty well."

The 26 year old went 66-66 over the weekend on the same layout at last week’s Tenerife Open and he birdied six of the last seven holes on Friday to take a one shot lead on 14 under par, as the European Tour - and the golfing world - marked the 10th anniversary of the passing of the legendary Seve Ballesteros.

“I think I can speak for most of the Spanish players, we have all become dreamers trying to follow what Seve did," said Arnaus. "Whenever we were young, playing around the chipping area trying to become the magician that he was. I have to say that it's pretty special that the European Tour put that board behind the first tee because it reminds us of what he meant to our sport and to all the Spaniards. He was the icon for us.”

Arnaus had three runner up finishes in his maiden European Tour season in 2019 - including one in Spain at the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters hosted by the Sergio Garcia Foundation - while he also had a top five at the Mutuactivos Open de España.

A top ten last week represented his best finish so far on the 2021 Race to Dubai and Arnaus is once again flying on home soil as he looks for a first European Tour victory.

South African Garrick Higgo, who secured his second European Tour title on neighbouring Gran Canaria two weeks ago is at 13 under par after an eagle on the last.

“It's the first time I've hit the 18th fairway and I've played this course about ten times now, so that was nice," said Higgo. "The approach was just as good, putt was good. It broke a lot; I feel like these greens are breaking more and more as they are getting faster. It was nice to roll it in. It's nice that the greens are getting quicker. I like to dial putts in. The greens have held up nicely."

“I'm just doing some maintenance stuff. Just checking that everything is in the right spot. I'm not changing anything at all.”

Scottish trio Calum Hill, Richie Ramsay and Connor Syme – who also eagled the last –are then at 12 under par alongside Italian Francesco Laporta.

“I didn't start well, had a couple of bad shots," said Laporta. "I made a good putt on 15 for par (started from the 10th) and said to myself 'just start to play some golf like yesterday'. Made birdie on 16 and then went four under on my back nine. It was different conditions from yesterday, less wind. The course is just fantastic."

“It would be good to shoot a 59 on Saturday or Sunday! I haven't been in contention many times so I will just enjoy the next two days. Tomorrow I hope to play as well as yesterday.”
