Charlotte Heath Holds Her Nerve for Maiden LET Victory at La Sella Open

England’s Charlotte Heath claimed her maiden Ladies European Tour title after holding off Alice Hewson and Alessandra Fanali to win the weather-shortened La Sella Open in Spain.

The 24-year-old rookie began Sunday with a four-shot advantage, but that lead disappeared during the final round at La Sella Golf. Heath responded with a birdie at the 18th to complete a 1-over 73 and finish two shots clear on 10-under.

Hewson and Fanali shared second place at 8-under, while Sweden’s Kajsa Arwefjall finished fourth.

Heath Responds After Losing Her Lead

Clear skies replaced the storms that had reduced the tournament to 54 holes, although gusting winds continued to test the field in Dénia.

Heath made a solitary bogey at the 5th and turned in 37. Germany’s Helen Briem, the 2024 champion, drew level at 9-under through 13 holes before dropping a shot at the next.

Briem and Singapore’s Shannon Tan then slipped back, while Fanali established the clubhouse target with a final-round 68. Hewson birdied the last after narrowly missing an eagle putt that would have tied Heath’s lead.

Heath needed a controlled finish and drove into the fairway at the par-5 18th before missing the green to the right. She pitched to nine feet and converted the birdie putt, closing the back nine with two birdies and two bogeys.

“It’s incredible,” Heath said. “This year, I’ve gone out in the leading group twice before, so I guess it’s third time lucky.”

Heath credited caddie Alex Long with keeping her composed as the leaderboard tightened.

“When the pressure is on, negative thoughts can creep in, so I’m very, very happy to get it done,” she said. “I had no idea where I stood and I think Alex knew I didn’t want to know.”

Her short game helped compensate after the iron play that powered Friday’s 7-under 65 became less reliable in the final round.

“My iron play is usually the best part of my game, but it was probably the weakest part today,” Heath said. “My chipping really got me out of trouble.”

Hewson and Fanali Share Second

Hewson’s closing birdie secured a share of second place alongside Fanali, who recorded her best result of the season.

Pia Babnik produced a 67, matching Liz Young for the lowest round of the day, to share fifth with Briem. Tereza Kazar Melecka, Lauren Walsh and Tan tied for seventh at 5-under.

The LET season continues at the Buccellati Ladies Italian Open, staged at Golf Club Milano from September 25 to 27.
