Scottie Scheffler backed up his flawless opening round at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson with a bogey-free 63 after firing an eagle at the par-5 18th and adding six birdies in his back nine after resuming play following a weather delay.
“Feeling good. I had two nice days. We’ll see how the scores shake out as more guys come in,” said the American.
“Overall, very pleased with how I played. Yeah, pretty good. Go home, get a little bit of rest, and get ready for tomorrow.”
Scheffler currently leads by six strokes with play suspended overnight due to darkness, it would be the largest 36-hole lead in tournament history (previous, 5 strokes/Jason Kokrak/2017). The largest 36-hole lead this season so far was 4 strokes
“The golf course was pretty wet, but overall I think it recovered nicely. We got a good amount of rain today, and we got a good amount of rain on Wednesday as well. I thought the golf course held up nice. The greens were pretty good still,” added Scheffler.
His 124 marks his best 36-hole total on the PGA Tour. He shot his previous best of 127 at the 2019 The Greenbrier where he finished T7. He shot 128 at the 2023 CJ Cup Byron Nelson en route to a T5 finish. 18-under marks his best 36-hole score in relation to par. He had previously shot 16-under at the 2024 Sentry.
Scheffler is one stroke shy of the all-time 36-hole opening score on Tour (since 1983) recorded by Justin Thomas at the 2017 Sony Open in Hawaii.
The 28-year-old Texan seeks his 14th win in his 139th start on Tour. He last won at the 2024 Tour Championship.
Scheffler started the week No. 7 in the FedExCup standings. He has finished in the top 25 in each of his eight starts on Tour in 2025 (best finish: T2/Texas Children’s Houston Open).
Fort Worth native Sam Stevens is bogey-free through 36 holes for the first time in his 82nd start on Tour. He lies in second place at 12-under after a second-round 65.
American PGA Tour rookie Ricky Castillo carded a 66 and lies in third place at 11-under with Venezuelan Jhonattan Vegas in fourth place one shot behind after closing with a 69.
Preferred lies were in effect for the second round. Round two was suspended at 9:46 a.m. CT due to lightning and resumed at 4:01 p.m., a delay of 6 hours, 15 minutes.
Play was suspended due to darkness at 8:06 p.m. and is scheduled to resume at 7:15 a.m. Saturday with 18 players yet to begin round two. Rain on Friday: 0.88.
