Sebastian Muñoz and Chesson Hadley both signed for 63s to take the lead at the TPC Deere Run, with Hadley remaining bogey-free while Muñoz made one bogey at the par-4 8th.

“I just go blank, to be honest,” said Muñoz. “It’s funny because when I make a lot of birdies, I usually play a little more safe and pick my spots. I have like 10-, 12-footers and they start to drop. That’s what I did today. And that’s where we’re at.”

There is a final possibility to earn a spot in the Open for the leading player in the top-5 not already qualified. Muñoz is already in the field but Hadley isn’t.

Hank Lebioda narrowly missed joining them in the lead after missing a par putt at the 9th (his final hole) and closing with a 64 alongside Chez Reavie and Camilo Villegas.

Three-time champion Steve Stricker, who opted to play the John Deere Classic instead of defending his U.S. Senior Open title, struggled on his front nine with three bogeys and a birdie before firing three more birdies on his back nine to close with a 70.

“I’m not used to getting up at 5 in the morning anymore to play. And I kind of played like I was still asleep for a while. Righted the ship a little bit. A little disappointed that I didn’t capitalize on a few more of those coming in.”
