She tied the record for the largest 18-hole lead in a major championship following Mickey Wright who led by five in the 1961 edition that she went on to win.

"The course, after a lot of rain, feels longer," said the South Korean. "At the same time, greens were softer. So I think it was just a balance."

Thailand's Pornanong Phatlum and fellow Sout Korean Hye-Jin Choi closed with bogey-free 69s to cut Chun's lead by two shots.

South Africa's Paula Reto and American Jennifer Chang closed with 70s to tie for fourth place at 2-under.

Defending champion Nelly Korda is tied in sixth place at 1-under alongside eight other players including fellow American Jennifer Kupcho.

"I feel like I played really well. The course is really hard," said Kupcho. "I don't really know how In Gee is 8-under right now. That's definitely an outlier."
