LIV Golf Mexico City: Joaquin Niemann qualifies for the U.S. Open

Joaquin Niemann has earned a space in the 2025 U.S. Open after his victory at the LIV Golf Mexico City event

Joaquin Niemann won his third individual title of the 2025 season at the LIV Golf Mexico City event, prevailing over Bryson DeChambeau by three shots.

At the start of the third round, DeChambeau was leading the field having shot rounds of 63 and 66. It looked as though he had put his Masters disappointment firmly behind him.

Niemann was lurking in the shadows, however, ready to strike if the two-time U.S. Open champion’s level dropped.

A level par round of 71 proved to be his undoing. He mixed four birdies with two bogeys and one double-bogey to eventually finish T2 along with Lucas Herbert, who shot a stunning 61 on Sunday.

The wait for his third LIV Golf League individual victory continues. For Niemann, this win stretched his lead in the standings to an impressive 30 points.

Joaquin Niemann is playing the best golf of his career right now

This might sound like an exaggeration, but taking a deeper look into his statistics this season, Niemann has been incredibly consistent.

The Chilean golfer hasn’t finish lower than 33rd across any of the opening six events of the LIV Golf season. His recent victory in Mexico has increased his lead at the top of the standings.

Niemann also averages 4.89 birdies per round, along with averaging a driving distance of 326.7 yards.

He has also hit 73.15% of greens in regulation over his six tournaments thus far (ranking in the top three again), proving all aspects of his game are working perfectly.

Niemann was expected to spearhead the LIV charge at the 89th Masters, but it didnt work out that way.

Despite a hot start at Augusta – birdieing three of his opening four holes – the South American could only finish the tournament at level par, good enough for a T29 finish.

The good news for the 26-year-old is that he is currently in the field for the next three major championships of 2025. The victory in Mexico City means he wont be forced to qualify for the U.S. Open at Oakmont.

This win ensured that he wouldn’t be overtaken in the individual standings before May 19. This date is the cut off for the LIV Golf League’s new exemption pathway into the competition.

“My team was asking me to sign up for the qualifier and the sectional, and I wasn’t really into that,” he said after winning in Mexico.

“So, more than anything I’m grateful that I’m not playing 36 holes on a Monday after a tournament. Yeah, I’m pretty happy.”

Niemann will be looking to improve on his best result at the third major of the year – a T23 finish in 2020 at Winged Foot.  Given how well he is playing right now, June cannot come quickly enough.
