Cameron Young carded a flawless 64 in his first Open Championship round to take a two shot lead, benefitting from milder morning conditions.

"Any time you set foot on the first tee or 18th green or anywhere, especially on that part of the (Old) course, there's just no hiding how special of a place it is," said the American.

"And it's certainly been a goal to get to an Open Championship. And for my first one to be here is a little bit extra special for me."

Another morning starter, Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, carded a 66 to move into second place.

Australia's Cameron Smith is tied a further shot behind alongside late starter Robert Dinwiddie of England.

Eight players are tied in fifth at 4-under, among them England's Lee Westwood and American Scottie Scheffler, the current World number 1.
