Scottie Scheffler of the United States plays his second shot on the 18th hole during Day Two of The 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club

Scottie Scheffler made a single bogey on Friday and fired eight birdies to close with a 64 and take the lead at 10-under at the Open Championship.

“I felt like I hit a few more fairways than I did yesterday, hit some really nice iron shots, and was able to hole some putts,” said the World Number 1.

“When we were teeing off, depending on what weather forecast you looked at, it was going to tell you something different. It was super sunny when we were on the driving range, I’m out there in short sleeves, it’s warm out. Then we get to the 1st hole, it’s still sunny. Then all of a sudden, you look around and it’s super dark and it starts pouring rain. You’re like, boy, I wonder how long this is going to last.

“Fortunately, it didn’t pour the whole time. We only had maybe four or five holes where it was really coming down, and I was able to take advantage of the holes where we had some good weather.”

His 64 was the lowest of the second round and only one shot off the course record of 63 set in the third round in 2019 by Shane Lowry.

The American holds his 19th career 36-hole lead/co-lead on the PGA Tour and the fourth this season (Texas Children’s Houston Open/T2, The CJ Cup Byron Nelson/Won, Travelers Championship/T6).

It is his fourth 36-hole lead/co-lead in major championships and he is 2-for-3 to date in converting to victory (2022 Masters Tournament/won, 2023 PGA Championship/T2, 2024 Masters Tournament/won).

Scheffler is the only player with top-10s in the first three majors of 2025 (4th/MastersTournament, 1st/PGA Championship, T7/US Open). He has finished inside the top-25 in all 15 starts this season and entered the week with ten consecutive top-10 finishes.

England’s Matt Fitzpatrick carded eight birdies and three bogeys for a 66 and second place at 9-under. He is making his tenth start at The Open Championship, with a T20 at Royal Portrush in 2019 his best finish.

“I felt like every facet of my game was on today and I felt like I really played solid,” said Fitzpatrick. “To take advantage of the opportunities I had out there was obviously really positive.

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy made two bogeys and closed with a 69 for a share of twelfth place at 3-under.

Four players completed bogey-free rounds in the second round of The 153rd Open; Americans Keegan Bradley, Brian Harman and Max Greyserman as well as Englishman Jordan Smith.

Nine of the sixteen former Champions playing in The 153rd Open Championship have made the cut (Brian Harman, Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, Shane Lowry, Justin Leonard, Henrik Stenson and Francesco Molinari).

Justin Leonard has made the cut for the first time in The Open since 2013 at Muirfield.

Spieth is playing in The Open for the twelfth time and has never missed the cut. His worst finish of tied 44th was on his first appearance in 2013 at Muirfield.

Xander Schauffele made the cut for the 69th straight time dating to the 2022 Masters Tournament, the sixth-longest streak in Tour history (Tiger Woods/142; Byron Nelson/113; Jack Nicklaus/105; Hale Irwin/86; Dow Finsterwald/72).

50 of the 121 Opens to have been held since the format was changed to 72-holes in 1892, have been won by a player in the lead or joint-lead after 36 holes. 36 of The Opens since 1892 have been won by a player in the outright lead after 36 holes.

Out of the nine amateurs in the field, none have made the cut meaning that there will be no Silver Medal awarded this year. This is the first year since 2019, also at Royal Portrush, that no Silver Medal has been awarded.
