Ireland’s Leona Maguire opened with a bogey-free 8-under 62, setting a new course record, to take the opening lead of the Pelican Women’s Championship on Thursday.
Pelican’s Championship 2021 R1
This was the second-lowest score of her career on the LPGA following her 61 in the final round of the Amundi Evian Championship earlier this year. She has now opened with an under-par round for the thirteenth time in 18 stroke-play events this season.
“It was pretty stress-free. I played the par-3s really well and birdied all of them, which helped. It was just really, really solid. Hit a lot of greens, gave myself a lot of chances and rolled some nice putts.”
.@pelicanlpga defending champion @SY_KIM_lpga began her title defense with a bogey-free 64. She is the only player on the @LPGA ranked in the top six in strokes gained off the tee (0.85, 6th) and approach (1.72, 3rd). pic.twitter.com/TAGhBQFZE9

Pelican’s Championship 2021 R1
Defending champion Sei Young Kim of South Korea lies two shots back after a bogey-free 64.
“Well, no bogeys today, so I got a little bit of confidence from the no mistakes,” said Kim. “Hopefully I can keep it going through final round.”
Pelican’s Championship 2021 R1
Seven players are tied in third place at 5-under including Lexi Thompson who was playing with Maguire and Kim and was equally bogey-free.
“I definitely felt good with my putter. I was playing aggressive and going for the few pins that I could,” said Thompson. “There are a few longer holes, but at the same time there are a lot of shorter holes as well, so taking advantage of those and getting pars on the harder ones is key.”
