Chilean Mito Pereira had a difficult time around the turn on Saturday, producing four bogeys in five holes from the 8th, but he recovered with three birdies to close with a 69 and heads into the final round with the lead at 9-under.

The 27-year-old is in position to become the first PGA Tour rookie to win a major since Keegan Bradley won the 2011 PGA Championship.

“I was playing really good and suddenly I made four bogeys in five holes. It was a tough place to be at that moment,” he said. "But just found myself from 13 on. Those holes are pretty tough. So really happy how I ended up playing. The birdie on 18 was a bonus.

“Just happy to be in this position.”

His performance was impacted by the cold and the norhtern wind in Tulsa, as were many others, making Southern Hills play differently and resulting in only sixteen players remaining under par.

England's Matt Fitzpatrick closed with a 67 for a share of second place alongside overnight leader Will Zalatoris who shot 73 to move back to 6-under.

“I was pretty frustrated with the start but I would rather have a frustrating start and good finish. It’s good momentum heading into tomorrow,” said Zalatoris.

Fellow American Cameron Young's 67, helped by an eagle at the 17th, places him in fourth place at 5-under followed by Mexico's Abraham Ancer at 4-under.

Tiger Woods closed with a 79 and withdrew for the first time in a major as a professional after limping all day. He previously withdrew from the 1995 U.S. Open at Shinnecock when he was an amateur.
