Rory McIlroy birdied the par-4 18th to close with a 65 on Thursday for a one-shot lead in the PGA Championship.

"It was a great start. I've been carrying some good form. I think when your game is feeling like that, it's just a matter of going out there and really sticking to your game plan, executing as well as you possibly can, and just sort of staying in your own little world.

“I feel like this course, it lets you be pretty aggressive off the tee if you want to be, so I hit quite a lot of drivers out there and took advantage of my length and finished that off with some nice iron play and some nice putting.”

The Northern Irishman has made twenty seven starts in majors since he won his last one and he has broken par in his opening rounds only fifteen times. In fact it was his lowest start in a major since he won the 2014 PGA at Valhalla.

This is a good sign since, in the seven previous majors at Southern Hills, the winner has held at least a share of the opening lead every time.

Behind him at 4-under are Americans Will Zalatoris and Tom Hoge who shot 66s.

Compatriots Matt Kuchar and Justin Thomas are tied in fourth at 3-under alongside Mexico's Abraham Ancer
