Belgian Thomas Detry birdied his final four holes to close with a 68 and take a one shot lead in the Porsche European Open at Green Eagle Golf Courses.

"I’m very pleased with the way I’ve been playing. I hit 12 fairways today, some really good golf so I’m pleased with it and I’m looking forward to the next couple of days."

Despite winning the ISPS HANDA Melbourne World Cup of Golf in 2018 alongside Thomas Pieters, Detry has yet to win on the European Tour in 113 starts but has had three runner-up finishes, two of them last season.

"The golf course is really tough this week, it’s almost a U.S. Open set up," he said. "I played the front nine really steady, my first nine holes, didn’t really make anything and made a little mistake - a bogey - but on the back nine I got it going.

"It’s very Major. I played the US PGA two weeks ago and it’s a similar approach, you have to drive it on the fairway otherwise it's really penalising.

"In a way that’s golf that suits me a bit more, I tend to struggle on easy courses where you’re forced to make birdies otherwise you’re losing ground and it’s a completely different approach on this golf course.

Swede Alexander Björk, England's Ashley Chesters, Scot David Law and China's Wu Ashun are tied for second place at three-under.

Chesters, who fired three birdies, two bogeys and an eagle at the 9th, narrowly missed out on a share of the lead when he missed a 13 footer on his last hole.

"I hit some nice shots," said Chesters. "I started by hitting it to three foot on the second, the par three, I hit a lovely five iron. I hit a terrible iron shot into the next, but after that I went back to what I was doing on the second. I hit some really nice shots, some good iron shots close.

"The rough is a big difference, there's a few places where you could hit it… like on the fourth, you could take the corner and if you get that wrong you'll have a lost ball. The 14th is a big change, it's a completely different hole. The others aren't quite as noticeable. But they've done a good job, even the short game area, they've put quite a lot of money into changing everything .

The Saturday start this year is a result of Covid-19 rules in Germany as fans return to fairways for the first time in Europe since October 2019.
