Tony Finau signed for a bogey-free 8-under 64 on Thursday to take a share of the opening lead in the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Rocket Mortgage 2022 R1

Finau won the 3M Open last week and held on to his form, opening with a birdie and five birdies. He hit all 18 greens in regulation for the first time in 728 stroke-play rounds on the PGA Tour.

"This game's a funny game because sometimes you play well and the next week you're a little flat, sometimes you play well and you keep it going. It was nice to keep it going after last week and keep it going today," said the American.

"The ball-striking was nice today. I guess I hit every green, which I wasn't aware of until after my round. First time in my career, so that was nice. I had a look every single hole for birdie and was able to pop a few in."

Rocket Mortgage 2022 R1

PGA Tour rookie Taylor Pendrith of Canada grabbed a share of the lead with five birdies in seven holes on his back nine.

"Putted the ball very well today, drove it good. When I did miss a fairway, I was in the right spots and all the pins happened to be in the back so I was able to kind of chase something up the green and I made a couple birdies that way. Played the par 5s well and honestly the whole day was very clean. One bogey on 18, but did a lot of good things right. Was never really out of position."

Americans Michael Thompson, Webb Simpson, Cameron Champ and Lee Hodges shot 66 for a share of third place alongside England's Matt Wallace.
