Steve Stricker's American side opened the Ryder Cup 6-2 having won five matches and tied two. Europe hasn't been this far behind on the first day since the Ryder Cup expanded to include the continent in 1979.

"It's a great start. We are happy with the start," said Stricker. "But my message to the guys is tomorrow is a new day. Pretend today never happened, and let's keep our foot down and continue to play the golf that we know we can play."

"No doubt, it was a tough day," said European captain Padraig Harrington. "There's obviously still 20 points to play for."

Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia won their morning foursome 3&1 against Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas. Rahm and Tyrell Hatton halved the afternoon four-ball against Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler as did Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland against Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay.

DeChambeau, although he didn't win a match, delivered a crowd pleasing 417 yards drive at the 5th to set up an eagle.

"There are two towers behind the green - I can't even describe to you - they are like 250 or 200 yards right of where I'm trying to hit my drive," said Scheffler. "And it's crazy for him to be able to commit to that shot.

"It was great. That was a good spark for us and good momentum for the rest of the day."

Rory McIlroy lost both his matches and will miss out the Saturday foursomes. He had previously played in every session since making his debut in 2010.
