Four-time Major champion and former World No.1, Ernie Els, is introducing his prestigious Els Club brand to Europe for the first time. Partnering with Arrow Global, Els will bring an entirely new level of luxury and exclusivity to the Algarve with the launch of The Els Club Vilamoura, set to open in the summer of 2025.
This groundbreaking venture marks the Algarve’s first private members’ golf club, setting a new benchmark for world-class amenities in the region. Known for their distinctive blue-and-gold hallmark, Els Clubs have become a symbol of golfing excellence, and the Vilamoura location promises to uphold its stellar reputation.
“This one is really special,” Els shared. “We have been keeping this one under wraps as we know the standing this property has in the eyes of the golfing public and wanted to hit the mark with the design. I have loved the challenge of creating something exceptional for this part of the world – and I can’t wait for people to see it.”
The Els Club Vilamoura will debut on the former Victoria Course, a renowned venue previously home to the Portugal Masters. Acquired by Arrow Global in 2023, the championship course is undergoing a complete transformation under Els’ meticulous guidance. Together with his award-winning design team and overseen by DETAILS, the South African legend is reimagining the course to align with the high standards of his global brand.
“Any time you get the chance to work with an ownership group with a clear vision and mission, it allows us to focus our creative efforts in how we architect a product and experience that will stand the test of time,” Els explained. “The Algarve, and in particular Vilamoura, are outstanding destinations, and for me to see The Els Club proposition take its first steps in this market is a watershed moment.”
Els’ designs are renowned for their championship pedigree. From the PGA Tour to the DP World Tour, his courses have consistently hosted high-profile tournaments. “Whenever we design a golf course, we always have the eye on what makes it a championship golf course,” Els said. “This is going to be no different—with an exclusive, customized experience for all members.”
Els’ connection to the Algarve runs deep, evoking many fond memories of the region. “When the kids were small, we lived in England and could come down to this area for summer holidays. We would come down and play golf in the courses in Vilamoura,” he reminisced. “So, when the opportunity came up, through DETAILS, it really made sense to me. When I come here, I feel like I’m coming home.”
