There are ten amateurs in the Open Championship field this week, representing nine countries. The Silver Medal for leading amateur has been won eight times at Royal Birkdale, with the last seven of those being English. However, this year there are no English amateurs in the field.
This year’s final round takes place on 19 July. This date marks the 34th anniversary of Sir Nick Faldo’s triumph in The Open at Muirfield in 1992.
Royal Birkdale has previously hosted the AIG Women’s Open, Senior Open, Ryder Cup, Curtis Cup and Walker Cup, as well as The Amateur, Women’s Amateur and Boys’ Amateur championships in a decorated history.
