Scottie Scheffler made it to the final in 2021 and lost to Billy Horschel whom he beat 1 Up this year in the Round of 16. Should he reach the final and win this year he would replace Jon Rahm at the top of the World Rankings.

"I felt like I played really good this afternoon. I didn't have my best stuff this morning, but I hung in there. I gave Billy a few holes on the front nine, but i hung in there and made some key putts there towards the end and finished off that match.

"I played really solid this afternoon. I didn't really give Seamus many openings outside of one -- I think on 8 we got -- it was basically blowing straight in our face and I was playing 10 paces short of the pin and we got a down gust, and I think that was really the only mistake I made today. Outside of that I just really kept the pressure on him this afternoon."

First though, he would have to defeat his fellow American Dustin Johnson who remains undefeated so far this week having won against England's Richard Bland 3&2 in the Round of 16 and Brooks Koepka 2 Up in the Quarterfinals having been 2 down.

"It's been great," said Bland. "Obviously today didn't go my way but when you're playing against arguably the best player in the world, he's not going to make it easy for you.

"Even though I got 2 Up on him early, he put the squeeze on me around the turn and he got that two-hole lead.

"I wasn't quite playing my best stuff and it's tough to get back in the match when you get 2 Down to him but it's been a good week."

Bland, who was making his first start in Austin this week, tied with Bryson DeChambeau and beat Talor Gooch and Lee Westwood to reach the knockout stage and was satisfied with his performance.

He now needs a win at the Valero Texas Open to make it to Augusta.

"I've learned that I can compete with these guys," said Bland. "How much longer I've got left doing that I don't know - hopefully a little while yet.

"When I play my way and the way I want to play I can give these guys a run for their money and I look forward to doing it again."
