Maverick McNealy found out Monday night that he would be playing in his first World Golf Championship after last week's Valspar champion Sam Burns withdrew from the tournament.

"I was home last week, really hoping I'd get the chance to play, preparing like I was going to get a chance to play and had a nice round today for sure," said McNealy.
"Definitely got off to a good start. I think I was 4-under through 7. Jaco didn't have his best stuff today, but it's one of those things where he's such a good player I knew he could rattle off five birdies at any given time. Just wanted to keep the pedal down and make sure he didn't have the opportunity."

McNealy went on to play the third-shortest match in the event's history winning 8&6 over Joaquin Niemann.
The shortest match of the day unfortunately went to Paul Casey and Corey Conners after Casey had to conced due to back spasms but didn't withdraw from the tournament in hopes of playing the next two matches.

Belgium's Thomas Pieters almost found the water at the 13th but his ball settled in a sprinkler head instead. Although it would usually be a good thing his ball touched the red paint hazard line and he got not relief. He lost the hole but went on to win his match against Tom Hoge.

Bryson DeChambeau, back from injury, later found the same sprinkler head and did get a free drop as in the meantime officials allowed the paint to be redone as paint would not usually touch the side of the sprinklers.
“Two wrongs don’t make a right. To make the correction before Bryson’s match got there was important,” said Chief referee Gary Young.
