Scottie Scheffler birdied four of his final six holes but missed at the 18th to card a 67 and set up a playoff for the WM Phoenix Open against Patrick Cantlay who closed with a bogey-free 67 to reach 16-under.

"I didn't hit a bad putt," said Scheffler. "It didn't feel great coming off the face, but I think I just hit it through the break. I think there was a little bit of excitement, whatever it was. If you would have told me on 13 tee I was going to be in a playoff, I would have been pleased. I felt a little bit out of it at that point, so to finish with four birdies coming in to get in a playoff was pretty nice."

Both Americans parred the first two extra holes but while Scheffler sank a 25-foot birdie putt at the third, Cantlay missed an 11-footer.

"I've had a few putts on this green now," said Scheffler. "I started to have it figured out pretty good. Teddy and I had a good read on this one. There's a little flat spot there that does something weird to the putts; it kind of keeps them to the right. Patrick missed both his putts right there to the right in the playoff, and that's where I missed mine to win in regulation.

"It's kind of a tricky hole location. This one we got a good read on it and it chased down nicely."

Scheffler's first PGA Tour title comes in his 71st start.

Sahith Theegala, who was playing on a sponsor exemption and had led after the first three rounds, closed with a 70 for a share of third place at 15-under alongside fellow Americans Xander Schauffele (68) and Brooks Koepka (69).
