"It was one of my biggest goals to win in front of the Japanese fans here in this country as well. So happy that I'll be able to accomplish that. Also, in 2019 Tiger won the Masters and went on to win the ZOZO Championship, so I'm glad that I would be able to emulate that as well."

Matusyama didn't feel good about his game this week, especially compared to his form earlier in the year for the Masters, and he credits the crowds for helping him win.

"I would rate my performance as 2 or 3. From the results perspective, it went about to 8, but I think it's because all the energy that I was getting from the fans and I was very surprised how much energy I was feeding off of them."

Americans Brendan Steele (66) and Cameron Tringale (69) tied for second place at 10-under.

"I'm really happy with it," said Steele. "We had a lot of different conditions this week and obviously traveling over is difficult sometimes to get on the right time zone and feel good. To have a chance to do something special this week is really cool. I'm really proud of myself the way I hung in the last two days and then the way I handled the pressure today.

"It's a really difficult course, very narrow, can't get offline. The greens are super tricky. Even without conditions it's still difficult, but you could score a lot better today than the last two days, for sure."

Englishman Matt Wallace closed with a 70 for a share of fourth place at 6-under alongside Canadian Mackenzie Hughes (67) and Colombian Sebastian Muñoz (70).

Open champion Collin Morikawa closed with a 69 to tie for seventh place at 5-under with seven other players, among them Tommy Fleetwood (70).
