Ivan Cantero and Keenan Davidse both made nine birdies and a single bogey for an 8-under 64 to take a share of the lead at the Jonsson Workwear Open.
Local favourite Davidse matched his lowest round on a windy day at Glendower Golf Club. He finished in the top-20 at last week’s SDC Championship and believes he can better that result this week.
“I made 27 birdies last week to finish 16th, five under for the tournament. I made nine birdies today and one bogey. I told myself, ‘if you eliminate the bogeys and the mistakes you can score’, because I make enough birdies.”
Spain’s Cantero missed his first five cuts this season but made the cut last week and feels good about his chances.
“I started really bad this season,” he said. “I had no confidence in my first tournaments, my game was not good.
“Now I’m starting again to hit good drives and good putts and my confidence is good again and I’m happy with my score.
“I made all the putts, it was amazing,” he said. “I’ve started to work with Alejandro Larrazábal and I’m happy with my work.”
Fellow South Africans Oliver Bekker, Louis de Jager and Thriston Lawrence lie a shot back at 7-under with de Jager manging to stay bogey-free.
