Alejandro Tosti signed for a bogey-free, 5-under 65 to take a share of the lead at the Texas Children’s Houston Open where play was suspended due to darkness.
“Very, very pleased with the result. I played very solid and very excited to be in the clubhouse now,” said the Argentinian.
“I think it’s just the combination of length and that the rough is not playing long so I’m able to just tee it up and bomb it. That’s my strength, so I think that will be the key on this course for me.!
Tosti finished T2 at last year’s event, his career-best finish on the PGA Tour.
“First time contending in a PGA Tour tournament and ending in that bitter way, it wasn’t really good. It just crazy to see that one shot can change your career or your — I mean, the year at least. I reflecting at the end of the year, that one shot ended up costing me, I mean, getting in majors and elevated events, my card for two years and at the end of the year I ended up losing my card. It’s crazy how one shot can change everything.”
American Ryan Gerard made two back-to-back bogeys from the 8th as well as seven birdies for his share of the lead and his lowest 18-hole score on Tour this season. His best finish of 2025 so far was T15 at the Farmers Insurance Open.
Fellow American Keith Mitchell also made two bogeys as well as an eagle at the par-5 16th and five birdies to join the tie at the top of the leaderboard.
Mitchell has finished in the top-25 twice this season (T21/The American Express, T25/WM Phoenix Open).
Canada’s Taylor Pendrith completes the four-way tie at the top having made a single bogey at the 18th. Pendrith has recorded two top-10 finishes in eight starts this season (T7/Farmers Insurance Open, T9/AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am).
World No. 1 and reigning FedExCup champion Scottie Scheffler of the United States opened with a bogey-free 3-under 67 and lies in T13.
Making his first start at the event since 2014 and his debut at Memorial Park Golf Course, FedExCup leader Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland opened with a 70.
