Rory McIlroy wins in season debut

AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am R4

Rory McIlroy closed with a 66 featuring an eagle at the par-5 14th, five birdies and a bogey on Sunday to reach 21-under and win the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am by two shots. He led the field this week in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee (5.970) and Driving Distance (336.7).

“It’s been a great week for a lot of different reasons, hole-in-one, playing Cypress for the first time, obviously getting a win. Yeah, it’s been a really cool week. Obviously couldn’t wish for a better start for my PGA Tour season. I’ve been on a nice run of form since last fall. I’ve played some really good golf and continued that into this year. Yeah, just obviously, as I said, just a great way to start the year,” said the Northern Irishman.

“There’s some venues in our game that just mean a little bit more than others and that’s probably to do with the history and the people that have won on those courses and what those people have meant to the game of golf. I’ve had a few close calls at St. Andrews, which is another one of those important venues in our game. Augusta National being another one, too. So to be able to get a win on one of those iconic venues is awesome.

“It’s a very different test this week than what you would typically expect at a US Open, so got to take it with a little bit of a pinch of salt. I finally feel that my game can travel to any sort of golf course in any conditions, in any setup really. I feel like I’m a very well rounded golfer and I can adapt to whatever I need to adapt to. I was able to show that this weekend, especially yesterday with those conditions.”

This is McIlroy’s 27th career PGA Tour title in his 258th start at the age of 35 years, 8 months, 29 days. He moves to 22nd on the all-time Tour wins list, breaking a tie with Henry Picard.

“Getting to that number is really cool,” said McIlroy. “I think for me it’s even more meaningful that I don’t really play a full, full schedule on the PGA Tour either. I spend my time between here and the DP World Tour.

“I think I’m up over 40 or 40 worldwide wins, which is a pretty cool number. 27 is a cool number on the PGA Tour. Hopefully I keep adding to that and break a 30 barrier at some point this year and keep going from there.”

He has now won in eight consecutive seasons on Tour and this victory was his third time winning in his season debut.

Ireland’s Shane Lowry who was tied in second place alongside McIlroy overnight made seven birdies and three bogeys for a 68 to finish second at 19-under, his fourth career runner-up finish on Tour.

American Lucas Glover carded a final-round 67 for a share of third place at 18-under alongside England’s Justin Rose who shot 68.

American Russell Henley closed with five consecutive birdies for a 67 and tied for fifth place at 17-under with Australian Cam Davis who shot a bogey-free 69.

36- and 54-hole leader Sepp Straka of Austria made four birdies and four bogeys for a 72 to finish T7 at 16-under, his second top-10 finish in his fourth start of the season to remain No. 1 in the 2025 FedExCup standings.

In his season debut, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler recorded a 67 to finish T9 at 15-under.
