Foursomes notes

• Since the start of the 2023 Ryder Cup, Team Europe holds a 10-2 advantage in foursomes play.

• A team has overcome a 3-1 or worse first-session deficit to win a Ryder Cup five times: Europe in 1957, 1985 and 2018; USA in 1949 and 1971.

• This is the first time that Europe has ever won each of the first three matches played in a Ryder Cup played on American soil.

• This is the first time that a team won three matches by at least four holes in the opening session of a Ryder Cup since 1951, when Team USA did that at Pinehurst. Under captain Sam Snead’s watch, the U.S. won three foursomes matches on Friday, by scores of 5&3, 5&4 and 5&4.

• This is just the third time in the last 27 Ryder Cups (since 1973) that Team Europe earned at least 3 points in the opening session. They led 3.5 to .5 in 2004 (won the Ryder Cup, 18.5 to 9.5) and they led 4-0 in 2023 (won 16.5 to 11.5).

• The tandems of Jon Rahm & Tyrrell Hatton and Rory McIlroy & Tommy Fleetwood are both now 3-0-0 in career Ryder Cup foursomes matches played together. Sergio Garcia & Luke Donald is the only other European tandem to have won each of its first three foursomes matches. Garcia and Donald won each of their first four such matches, spanning 2004 and 2006.

• Dating back to 1991, teams that earned at least three points (out of four) in the first session (Friday Morning) have a Ryder Cup record of 7-1.

• Over the last three Ryder Cups (2018, 2021, 2023), teams that held a lead in foursomes at the end of nine holes had a cumulative record of 20-1-0.

• Scottie Scheffler has now trailed by at least four holes in each of his three career Ryder Cup foursomes matches.

• Tyrrell Hatton, with a career Ryder Cup record of 4-0-1 after his foursomes win Friday morning, has the most points ever by a European through his first five career matches.

• A player ranked #1 on the OWGR has played a Ryder Cup foursomes match 22 times, including Scottie Scheffler Friday morning. Their cumulative record is now 10-11-1.

• Both Jon Rahm and Tommy Fleetwood have won each of their first four career Ryder Cup foursomes matches, including their victories Friday morning. The only European players with longer streaks from the start of their Ryder Cup careers are Sergio Garcia (8), Luke Donald (6), Tony Jacklin (5) and Billy Casper (5).

• Over the last two Ryder Cups (2021,2023) teams that won the first hole in foursomes had a cumulative record of 6-2-0 in those matches.

• Prior to today, Justin Thomas had played in five previous Ryder Cup foursomes matches. Each of those matches was with Jordan Spieth as his partner (2-3-0).

• Bryson DeChambeau, who has never lost a Ryder Cup match on home soil (2-0-1), is competing in his first foursomes match on American soil. He went 0-2-0 in foursomes in Paris in 2018.

• Matt Fitzpatrick is looking for his first career Ryder Cup foursomes victory (0-3-0).

• Ludvig Åberg has now won all three career Ryder Cup foursomes matches. Playing alongside Viktor Hovland, they dispatched Scottie Scheffler & Brooks Koepka (9&7) and Max Homa & Brian Harman (4&3). Åberg is yet to see the 16th hole in Ryder Cup foursomes competition.
