Matti Schmid fired an eagle at the par-5 18th and posted a bogey-free 9-under 63 to match his career-low score to par on Tour and take the World Wide Technology Championship lead by one shot at 17-under.
“Today I would say drove it even better than yesterday,” said the German player. “I don’t think I chipped today, so yeah, I must have hit that many greens. I kept life pretty stress free out there today.
“You have to pick your spots, especially greens are pretty big and very undulated so you have to hit the right sections so you can give yourself good looks for birdie. Feel like I did that today. Yeah, rolled some putts in, too.”
Schmid is one of two players (Chad Ramey) in the field bogey-free through 36 holes. He joins Scottie Scheffler with most events bogey-free thru 36 holes on the PGA Tour since 2022 (5 events).
127 sets the new tournament low 36-hole scoring record at El Cardonal (previous: 128/Camilo Villegas/2023).
Schmid set his new career low 36-hole score on Tour (previous: 128/2022 ISCO Championship/finished T8). He holds his fourth 36-hole lead/co-lead on Tour and second this season (Charles Schwab Challenge/finished 2nd).
His career-best finish in 89 starts so far was second at the 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge. He has recorded four top-10 finishes in 25 starts this season (T6/Puerto Rico Open, T9/Corales Puntacana Championship, T7/ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic, 2nd/Charles Schwab Challenge).
First round co-leader and two-time PGA Tour winner Nick Dunlap of the USA made a double bogey at the par-4 7th and carded a 67 to move down into a share of second place. His 16-under 128 set his new career low 36-hole score on Tour (previous best: 129/2024 American Express/Won).
Finland’s Sami Välimäki also moved down into second place having made two bogeys for his own 67 and career low 36-hole score on Tour (previous best: 131/2024 Mexican Open at VidantaWorld/finished 2nd).
American Chad Ramey signed for a bogey-free 65 and lies in solo fourth place at 15-under.
FedExCup Fall Notes
The 2025 World Wide Technology Championship is the fifth event of the FedExCup Fall, a group of seven tournaments played after the Tour Championship that finalizes eligibility for the 2026 PGA Tour Season.
Winners of events during the FedExCup Fall receive the similar benefits of winners of Full-Field Events during the Regular Season, including 500 FedExCup points, Official World Golf Ranking points, a two-year PGA Tour exemption (exempt thru 2026) and invitations to The Sentry, the Players Championship and PGA Championship.
The Aon Next 10 is an eligibility pathway that awards access into Signature Events (outside of The Sentry), recognizing the top 10 players, not otherwise exempt, from the FedExCup standings; Nos. 51-60 in the final FedExCup Fall standings at the conclusion of The RSM Classic will serve as the Aon Next 10 for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational.
