Matt Fitzpatrick fired a second-round, bogey-free, 8-under 63 to move to 14-under and the top of the leaderboard at the RBC Heritage, tying his career-low 18-hole score (2025 Genesis Scottish Open/R2, 2025 Travelers Championship/R3, 2024 Travelers Championship/R3, 2023 RBC Heritage/R3).
He ranks third in Strokes Gained: Putting (5.060) after entering the week ranked 94th in Strokes Gained: Putting this season. He made 44 total putts through 36 holes; tied for the fourth fewest putts in the first two rounds at an event in the ShotLink Era.
“Good play, good breaks, took advantage of them, is probably the best way to describe it. I feel like I played well, had some good breaks and took advantage of them.,” said Fitzpatrick.
“I had a really good conversation with Phil Kenyon this week at the start of the week. I was frustrated and disappointed with my putting last week. It’s easy to say, but if you putt anything like last week and then get in the mix the way that I hit the ball, so come here not with high confidence with the putter and felt like we needed to really look into things and have a thought about what’s going to be different this week. Is it technically, is it reading.
“We touched on a few things and just feel like it’s given me a little bit more freedom, more than anything. With that obviously becomes more flow to the stroke, more flow to the routine. That’s sort of normally when I putt better.”
The Englishman holds his third 36-hole lead/co-lead on the PGA Tour and is 0-for-2 converting to victory (2019 WGC-HSBC Champions/7th, 2019 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational/T4).
The 2023 RBC Heritage winner seeks to become the 11th player to win the event multiple times. In eight starts this season, he has had three top-10 finishes, highlighted by a win at the Valspar Championship.
Norway’s Viktor Hovland made two bogeys and closed with a 65 to reach 13-under and stay in second place with a total of 129, the best 36-hole score of his Tour career in his 140th start (previous: 132, six occasions, most recently at 2024 Sentry). He sits inside the top three after two rounds for the first time since the 2025 US Open (finished 3rd). His best finish in three starts at the RBC Heritage was T13 (2025). He has had one top-10 in seven starts this year (T10/WM Phoenix Open).
American Harris English fired six birdies, one bogey and a double bogey at the par-4 11th for a 68 and solo third place at 10-under.
With a bogey-free, second-round 64, American Patrick Cantlay (T4 at 9-under) has now recorded a score in the 60s in 24 of 32 career rounds played at Harbour Town; owns five top-three finishes in eight prior appearances in the RBC Heritage (best: 2nd/2022).
Austrian Sepp Straka made five birdies and one bogey for a 67 and a share of fourth place. He ranks third in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee (1.950) and sixth in Strokes Gained: Putting (4.001); owns two top-five finishes in six career starts in the RBC Heritage (T5/2024, T3/2022).
Sweden’s Ludvig Åberg, who held the overnight lead, made four birdies and three bogeys for a 1-under 70 and moved down into fourth place. He sits inside the top five after 36 holes for the fourth time in his last five starts (Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players Championship, Valero Texas Open).
In T14 at 7-under, American World No.1 Scottie Scheffler hit every fairway (14/14) during his bogey-free, second-round 67, the fourth time in his career with 100% driving accuracy in a single round on Tour (569 rounds). He is the first player to do so at Harbour Town since 2023 (J.T. Poston/R2).
