Mayakoba
El Camaleón Golf Course
Hole 15 / Par-3 / 162 Yards
Architect: Greg Norman (2004)
Riviera Maya, Mexico
One of the virtues in playing the El Camaleón course at Mayakoba is the varying settings one encounters during the round.
The 18-hole layout has been the host for various elite level events including the PGA Tour from 2007 to 2022, LIV Golf in 2023 and 2024 and the LPGA Tour in 2025 and returning for 2026 this week with the Mexico Riviera Maya Open.
El Camaleón translates to “The Chameleon” and the Greg Norman course does provide a clear differential in eye appeal.
That is especially notable with the two par-3 holes — one for each of the nines — as both holes come the closest to the nearby Caribbean.
The teeing area was extended in recent years and the positioning is sheltered by trees that encase the area. As a result, players will not feel the full impact of the wind pattern. Generally, the pattern is right-to-left blowing off the water but variations are also quite possible.
The green is set on a slight rise with one solitary bunker on the left side. Players have to realize the bunker in question is more towards the front and a large portion of the putting surface resides behind and is quite deep – as many as a 3-4 club differential depending on the velocity of the wind.
When the pin is placed in the very front section, the effective landing area is quite small.
Conversely, when the pin is located in the deepest section of the green, the wherewithal to gauge proper distance can complicate matters.
Those getting into the green have to successfully negotiate vexing internal movements. Three-putting can happen swiftly for players careless with their play.
Standing on the green is an emotional release. The proximity of the water and the juxtaposition with the nearby green jungle area is a fascinating contrast.
What makes hole 15 standout?
Par-3 holes need not be lengthy. The combination of natural elements, in tandem with modest design inclusions, can provide sufficient test for all types of players.
Those competing in the upcoming LPGA event at Mayakoba (April 30-May 3) will need to be ever ready for the various challenges faced at hole 15.
