Si Woo Kim followed his first-round 64 with an 11-under 60, including a final-hole bogey, to reach 18-under and take a five stroke lead at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, while attempting to become the 15th different player to shoot sub-60 on the PGA Tour.
“I hit it great and putted great. So everything was perfect, other than the last hole. I’ll still take it. 60 is hard, but I was a little bit of thinking about the 59 after I make that on 17. It was a little bit of like adrenalin,” said Kim.
“Yeah, it was a tough shot, but I’ll take it still, 60.”
Kim holds the lead/co-lead for the fourth time in individual stroke-play events on Tour and is 1-for-3 to date in converting to victory: 2016 Wyndham Championship/Won, 2019 Valero Texas Open/T4, 2020 Wyndham Championship/T3.
He equaled his low round on Tour (R2/2016 Wyndham Championship/Won) and joins Blades Brown (R2/Nicklaus Tournament Course) and Andrew Putnam (R2/La Quinta CC), who both shot 60 at The American Express, with the lowest round on Tour this season.
124 marks his best 36-hole total on Tour by four strokes (previous: 128/2026 The American Express/T6, 128/2016 Wyndham Championship/Won) and ties the tournament 36-hole scoring record (Scottie Scheffler/2025).
A four-time PGA Tour winner, he seeks his first title since the 2023 Sony Open in Hawaii. He also won the 2016 Wyndham Championship, 2017 Players Championship and 2021 American Express.
Kim has now made 19 consecutive cuts on Tour; he last missed the cut at the 2025 Wyndham Championship.
Entering this week, he led all players with the most birdies on Tour since 2016 (3,776). He has notched six top-10 finishes in 14 starts this season with T2 at Farmers Insurance Open his best result.
Fellow Korean Sungjae Im carded a 10-under 61, his low round on Tour (752 rounds) having aced the par-3 7th and made another eagle at the par-5 9th as well as seven birdies and one bogey for a share of second place at 13-under.
2025 CJ Cup Byron Nelson winner Scottie Scheffler is one of two players bogey-free through 36 holes (Jackson Suber). He fired an eagle at the par-5 12th and six birdies for a 63 and a share of second place.
“I was joking there earlier, I felt like I was hitting all my shots to 15, 20 feet and Si Woo was hitting all his shots to like 8 feet or closer.
“Yeah, it was fun to watch. I was glad for myself to be able to kind of stay in the tournament. I made some nice putts there on the back nine, but it’s always fun to watch Si Woo do his thing.
“The greens have a lot of slope to them. If you’re off with the irons, you can put yourself in a few spots. But if you’re hitting your irons well, there’s a lot of birdies out there to be made. I would say, overall, iron play would be probably what I think is most important.
“Fairways is kind of — the rough, since it’s new, is a little thin, and the greens are a little softer. If you can get in there and get some looks, and obviously when the scores are this low, you’ve got to be holing a lot of putts as well.”
The American World No.1 is seeking to become the first player since Tiger Woods to successfully defend their title after winning by eight strokes the year prior (2007 WGC-Workday Championship at The Concession). The 20-time PGA Tour winner has successfully defended his title three times (2023 WM Phoenix Open, 2024 The Players Championship, 2025 Memorial Tournament).
25-year-old rookie Kensei Hirata of Japan followed an opening-round 64 with a bogey-free 65 for a 13-under 129 total, his best 36-hole total on Tour. He is a six-time winner on the Japan Golf Tour, including four victories in 2024.
Finally, also tied in second place are Americans Wyndham Clark, who fired a bogey-free 63 and Jackson Suber who eagled the par-5 12th and closed with a bogey-free 61.
Six players recorded 62 or better in round two of The CJ Cup Byron Nelson (60/Si Woo Kim, 61/Sungjae Im, Jackson Suber, 62/Jordan Spieth, Max Greyserman, Tom Hoge). Most recently, the second round of the 2025 RSM Classic featured six scores of 62 or better.
American Blades Brown (T38/-8) is 42.553 points short of the threshold for Special Temporary Membership of the PGA Tour, which he can reach with a solo 21st this week. He earned a spot in the field this week via his top-10 finish at the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic (T9) and currently lies in T38 at 8-under following a second-round 68 having made one bogey.
