- Terras da Comporta has entered GOLF.com’s Top 100 Golf Resorts in the World for the first time.
- The Portuguese destination has two 18-hole courses designed by David McLay Kidd and Sergio Garcia.
- The 2026 list was published on September 15 and includes 21 first-time entries.
Terras da Comporta has made its debut in GOLF.com’s ‘Top 100 Golf Resorts in the World’, three years after its first championship course opened south of Lisbon.
The Comporta development was among 21 new destinations in the 2026 edition, which was compiled by GOLF.com staff. The selection considers course quality alongside accommodation, hospitality and the wider visitor experience.
GOLF.com said Comporta’s golf offering changed with the arrival of The Dunas Course in 2023, before expanding with Sergio Garcia’s Torre Course in October 2025.
“The upscale beach community of Comporta, south of Lisbon, has been called Portugal’s answer to the Hamptons, with piney, sandy land kissed by ocean breezes,” the publication’s panel said. “What it didn’t always have was world-class golf.”
The panel said Dunas was “seamlessly woven into the rolling dunes”, while Torre added a second course to a destination combining contemporary luxury with its natural setting.
Two Courses Built Around Comporta’s Sandy Terrain
David McLay Kidd designed The Dunas Course across 84 hectares beside the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve. The par-71 layout measures 6,646 metres from the back tees and was his first project in mainland Europe.
Its broad fairways, sandy waste areas and firm fescue surfaces follow the contours of the site, with dunes and pine trees shaping strategy. Our opening review of Dunas highlighted its risk-and-reward options and multiple teeing choices, which range from 3,850 to 6,650 metres.
The course has since collected several awards. It was named Europe’s Best Golf Course at the 2025 World Golf Awards and reached number one in Portugal in the 2026 rankings published by Golf Digest and Top100GolfCourses.com.
Garcia’s Torre Course is a par-72 layout measuring 7,200 yards. Inspired by his fondness for Real Club Valderrama, it features broad landing areas and large expanses of waste sand, followed by smaller greens defended through bunkering and ground movement.
The course opened in October 2025 and was named the World’s Best New Course at that year’s World Golf Awards. A January visit to Comporta identified the double-dogleg par-5 11th and long par-4 18th among Torre’s strongest holes.
A Wider Mixed-Use Development
Vanguard Properties acquired Terras da Comporta in 2019. Its two main areas cover about 1,376 hectares, with Torre occupying 365 hectares and Dunas approximately 1,011 hectares.
Plans for the wider development include hotels, residential and tourist condominiums, plus facilities for horse riding, pickleball, padel and tennis. The project also promotes environmental measures on the golf courses, including native planting and computer-controlled irrigation using treated wastewater at Dunas.
Rodrigo Ulrich, golf general manager for Vanguard Properties, said the ranking supported the company’s aim to develop more than two standalone courses.
“Our ambition has always been to create something that goes beyond exceptional golf, bringing together world-class course design, nature, sustainability, hospitality and an authentic sense of place,” Ulrich said. “This new ranking is another important milestone for Terras da Comporta and underlines our growing reputation on the international golf stage.”
Terras da Comporta sits approximately one hour by road from Lisbon Airport, with the courses occupying a secluded coastal landscape near Comporta’s beaches and villages.
