Jean Hugo will take a one-shot advantage over Stephen Gallacher into Sunday’s final round of the Reignwood Legends Championship after returning a 5-under 67 at Reignwood Pine Valley in Beijing.

The South African followed his bogey-free opening 65 with another strong score to reach 12-under and a 36-hole total of 132. Gallacher, the Road to Cambodia Order of Merit leader, narrowed the gap with a 7-under 65.

Hugo made his decisive move at the eighth, his penultimate hole, where a birdie put him back in front. A closing par secured the overnight lead for the second successive day, having started Saturday two shots clear of the field.

“Stevie is a great player, so we’ll have a good tussle tomorrow,” said Hugo. “I think just start solidly, keep to the plan and try and ignore all the noise.”

Gallacher makes an early charge

Gallacher opened with three consecutive birdies to draw alongside Hugo at the top of the leaderboard. Maarten Lafeber also joined the early contest with gains at the 2nd and 4th, before the Scot moved ahead with another birdie at the 5th.

A bogey at the 6th interrupted Gallacher’s progress, but he continued to create chances as Lafeber’s challenge faded. Gallacher reached his final hole with the opportunity to post 12-under, only for a closing bogey to leave the clubhouse target at 11-under.

“I’m delighted with the way I played today,” said Gallacher. “Pity about the last, it’s such a tough par-4. I hit a poor shot, but I gave myself plenty of chances, putted well and was in control the whole day.”

“My goal was always just to get in contention on a Sunday and then take it from there. I just stick to my processes. I’m hitting the ball well and if the putts go in tomorrow, I should have a chance,” said Gallacher.

Chasing trio five shots behind

Van Phillips moved into a share of third place with a 6-under 66, joining Matt Cort and Adilson da Silva at 7-under. Cort added a 69 to his opening 68, leaving the trio five shots to make up over the final 18 holes.

Peter Baker and David Drysdale share sixth place at 5-under, with Jeev Milkha Singh, Joakim Haeggman and Johan Edfors another shot back.

Edfors won the European Legends Cup with a closing 64 two weeks ago, overturning a four-shot deficit for his second Legends Tour title of the season. He starts Sunday in Beijing eight shots behind Hugo.
