Ryan Armour Sets Tournament Record 63 to Lead Constellation FURYK & FRIENDS

The 50-year-old rookie beat the event’s old mark by a shot in its first year at Hammock Beach, as he chases a first win anywhere since 2017 and a place in the Sprint to St. Louis.

Ryan Armour
  • Ryan Armour shot a 9-under 63 in the first round of the Constellation FURYK & FRIENDS presented by Circle K.
  • Armour leads Paul Goydos and Rod Pampling by one stroke.
  • The 63 is the lowest 18-hole score in the tournament’s history, beating a 64 recorded six times.

Ryan Armour has spent most of his rookie season on PGA Tour Champions finding his feet. On Friday he found a place in the record books.

The 50-year-old went out in 31 and came home in 32 for a 9-under 63 at the Ocean Course at Hammock Beach Resort. That gave him a one-shot lead over Paul Goydos and Rod Pampling after the first round of the Constellation FURYK & FRIENDS presented by Circle K.

No one had gone lower than 64 in this event. That number had been posted six times, most recently by John Rollins and Matt Gogel in the second round last year, although all of those rounds came at Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville. The event was played there from 2021 to 2025. Armour’s 63 is also the best score in any PGA Tour Champions event on the Ocean Course. It beats the 64 David Eger closed with at the 2007 Ginn Championship. The course hosted that event in 2007 and 2008.

Armour is making his first start in this tournament. His only previous visit to Hammock Beach did not go well: he missed the cut at the 2008 Ginn sur Mer Classic on the resort’s Conservatory Course.

A rookie finding his range

The score matches Armour’s lowest round on the senior circuit, the 63 he shot in the second round of the Rogers Charity Classic in August. Friday’s round was his 45th on the tour. It is also the first time he has led or co-led after the opening round. His previous best first-round position was second at the PURE Insurance Championship, where he went on to finish fifth.

Armour, who turned 50 on February 27, failed to record a top-15 finish in his first nine starts. He arrived in Florida for his 15th start with five consecutive top-15s, including a tie for third at the Sanford International, his best result so far. He sits 36th in the Charles Schwab Cup standings.

Armour’s last victory came at the 2017 Sanderson Farms Championship, his only win in 270 PGA Tour starts, which was 3,269 days ago. He also won once in 260 starts on the Korn Ferry Tour, at the 2016 Panama Championship. A win this weekend would make him the 26th player to win on the PGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions and Korn Ferry Tour, following Ben Crane earlier this season. He would also be the fifth first-time winner of 2026, after Zach Johnson, Boo Weekley, Scott Hend and Crane, who won the American Family Insurance Championship team event with Darren Clarke.

Sprint to St. Louis on the line

This is the fourth of six events in the Sprint to St. Louis presented by Compliance Solutions, and Armour is third in those standings. The three biggest Charles Schwab Cup points earners across the final five regular-season events become finalists. They go to the Stifel Charity Classic, where the best finisher among them takes a $200,000 winner-take-all prize.

The chasers

Goydos, 62, opened with an 8-under 64 in his 277th start on the tour. He is seeking a sixth PGA Tour Champions title and his first since the 2017 3M Championship. His best finishes this season are two ties for seventh, at The Ally Challenge and the PURE Insurance Championship.

Pampling, 57, matched him. The Australian is chasing a third senior title in his 153rd start, having last won at the 2023 SAS Championship. His best result this year is a tie for seventh at the Chubb Classic.

The tour’s dominant trio have work to do. Stewart Cink, Zach Johnson and Steven Alker, the top three in the Schwab Cup standings, have won each of the last seven events between them. Johnson and Alker are tied for 12th and Cink is tied for 30th.

Bernhard Langer, who won the 2008 Ginn Championship on this course, the last PGA Tour Champions event held there, opened with a 71 and is tied for 49th.

Ryan Palmer had a debut to forget. The former PGA Tour winner, who turned 50 on September 19, made nines at both the 14th and 16th on the way to a 9-over 81 and sits 76th. Mark Hensby and Mike Weir both withdrew after the first round.
