A week after losing her World number 1 position, Jin Young Ko shot a final round 69 to reach 16-under and win her eighth career LPGA Tour title at the Volunteers of America Classic.

VOA Classic 2021 R4

Ko started her round well with birdies on three of her first four holes before losing ground with a bogey at the par-3 5th then parred the rest of the front nine to make the turn in 33. She fired one more birdie at the 10th immediately followed by another bogey at the par-3 11th before parring the final six holes.

"I was thinking I had a lot of pressure with the No. 1 ranking," said Ko. "But I made it this week. I'm very happy.

"I was thinking I couldn't win this week because like Matilda [Castren], she played really well today and yesterday, too. It's like I want to focus on my game on the course and then I tried to not think about Matilda, how she play, hit driver or whatever. And it was tough. But yeah, she's good player."

Castren missed a 25-foot birdie putt at the 18th to set up a playoff and closed with a 69 having played three birdies and a single bogey at the par-4 15th.

“I played with her the last two days and it was really cool to watch her play,” said Castren of Ko. “She didn't make many mistakes at all, recovered from not-so-great shots really well. I can definitely see why she was World No. 1 for so long. It was just really special.

“Especially yesterday with Lee6 in our group, I was walking down the fairway just thinking who would've known, a couple years ago, that I would be playing with these girls. I'm proud of how far I have come.”

Gaby Lopez made seven birdies to shoot 6-under 65 on Sunday. The flag bearer for Mexico at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics finished third at 14-under.

Emma Talley (63), Ana Belac (68) and Esther Henseleit (72) shared fourth place at 12-under.
