Englishman Jordan Smith made a single birdie on his front nine but fired seven on the back nine for an opening 62 to take the lead in the ISPS HANDA World Invitational presented by Modest! Golf Management.

“I’ve felt like it’s been sort of trending in the right way,” said Smith. “It just hasn’t all come together at the right point.

“My putting has even been good and my iron play has been good, it’s been one or the other, but today it sort of all came together, and more of the same.

“I think the back nine there’s a lot more wedges into holes but I think the front nine there’s a lot more long irons. There’s still a few wedges and obviously you’ve got a drivable second but that was the difference – just didn’t hit the longer clubs close enough.”

Matthias Schmid of Germany fired eight birdies and two bogeys to sign for a 64 and is tied in second place alongside Scotsman David Drysdale who produced seven birdies and a single bogey.

Schmid won the Silver Medal for the best amateur player at the Open Championship and finished T47 in his professional debut at the Cazoo Open last week.

Japan’s Masahiro Kawamura lies in solo fourth place at 5-under with seven birdies and two bogeys.

South Korean Chella Choi, Scotswoman Gemma Dryburgh and American Jennifer Kupcho lead the way at 7-under for the women.

Dryburgh produced one of the best rounds of the day with an eagle at the par-5 1st as well as five birdies in a bogey-free round.

“I’ve kind of had to stay patient and I knew a round like this was coming so it was good to see it come out today.”

“It’s really cool actually to see the guys in front of us and behind us. It’s nice to see an innovative event like that.”

Choi also eagled the first hole and made six birdies but bogeyed the par-3 5th.

Kupcho fired eight birdies but unfortunately bogeyed the par-4 6th.

American Emma Talley lies in solo fourth at 6-under.

Following in the footsteps of the ISPS HANDA Vic Open, this is the first time an event of this format has been tri-sanctioned by the European Tour, LPGA and LET in the northern hemisphere. The format sees 288 players, 144 men and 144 women take part in the competition, with the women’s field being split equally between the LPGA and the LET.

World Invitational 2021 R1

The tournament will count towards the European Tour’s Race to Dubai and carry Team Europe Ryder Cup points, while the women’s tournament will count towards the Race to the CME Globe for women on the LPGA Tour, the Race to Costa del Sol on the Ladies European Tour (LET) and Solheim Cup points for both Team Europe and Team USA. The $3 million prize purse will be split equally between the men and the women.
