Two-times former champion Tyrrell Hatton produced five birdies and an eagle in the back nine at Carnoustie for a 29 to close with an 8-under 64 and a share of the lead at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

“I didn’t actually realise, I just signed my card then. Obviously we needed a big back nine and very happy that the putter worked well and hopefully that continues.

“It’s always nice to start pretty good around this golf course. You go to the other ones and feel like you’ve got slightly more of a chance than here so we’ll see what the week brings.”

The Englishman is tied alongside Spain’s Adri Arnaus and China’s Haotong Li both bogey-free, as well as Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts who produced two eagles at the par-5s 5th and 14th.

Arnaus signed for his lowest round on the European Tour and was particularly pleased with his result having missed the cut in his first appearance in 2019.

“Every year that goes by I learn new things and as an amateur I did play a little bit around here but it’s not my native environment,” he said. “But I still enjoy coming to where the golf started and it’s, at the end of the day, a cool part of golf.”

Li, who has only made three cuts in the last thirteen months, produced his fourth sub-70 round this season at Kingsbarns.

Colsaerts has had two top tens at this event and shot his lowest score at the Old Course on Thursday.

“I think I’ve only played 18 holes in two weeks,” said Colsaerts. “So I basically had no expectations whatsoever.

“Once you start to play well at the Home of Golf, it’s a pretty nice feeling when you hit the shots, and making two eagles on the two par fives and birdie on 18, you basically tick every box on the Old Course, which is nice.”

Local Ewen Ferguson signed for a bogey-free 65 to share fifth place with Northern Ireland’ds Michael Hoey, also bogey-free, and Frenchman Romain Langasque.

Tommy Fleetwood, who like Hatton was part of the defeated Ryder Cup European Team, produced a bogey-free 66 for a share of eighth alongside Denmark’s Jeff Winther and Jazz Janewattananond of Thailand.
