"First out this morning, it was a bit chilly on the range and the first four or five holes the ball wasn’t really travelling but got away with a really good birdie on three and the par five on four as well."

"After that it started warming up and I started finding my range with the irons, so holed a couple of putts and hit it close so went well."

He remained bogey-free and fired eight birdies and an eagle at the par-5 14th to reach 10-under on Thursday.

"I think a few things have clicked. Some work I have done with the coach and some of the Covid restrictions somewhat easing off, I find mentally I am in a better place, so I think it is a combination of the two.

"I always seem to putt pretty well here and last time I played quite well here too, so looking forward to tomorrow."

McGowan won his first European Tour title in Madrid twelve years ago but had to wait until the 2020 Italian Open for his second title and a spot in the top-150 on the Race to Dubai for the first time since 2010. His form since has been lacking, he missed 16 of his next 19 cuts, but he finished T4 on the Omega European Masters in August.

Sebastián García Rodríguez of Spain, who has missed his last nine consecutive cuts, signed for a 62 to take second place followed by compatriot Jon Rahm, aiming for a third straight victory, who lies in third place after a 63.

Scotland's Grant Forrest fired the 31st hole-in-one in this season's Race to Dubai with an 8-iron from 181 yards at the par-3 9th to close with a 65 and a share of seventh place alongside Sweden's Joakim Lagergren, Frenchman Robin Sciot-Siegrist and Ryan Fox of New Zealand.
