Wil Besseling takes one-shot lead into the weekend

Dutchman Wil Besseling followed his opening 64 with a 65 on Friday, completing 36 bogey-free holes to take a one-shot lead at 13-under in Madrid.

Besseling came through Qualifying School in 2011 but only reached the top-100 in the Race to Dubai last season after three top-3 finishes.

“The last couple of seasons have been really good. I did struggle before that so it is good to be out here performing well and making putts, and being on top of the leaderboard after 36 holes, hopefully it will stay that way come Sunday.

“I made some big changes, my caddie is a big support, obviously the family and home and my sponsors that always believed in me, and a new coach that really got me going. So finding the right people around me has really helped and gives me a good feeling and support.

“You still need to hit the ball and get the practice hours in, but we do it all together, and the last couple of years has been really good.”

His best result so far this season was a tie for fourth place at the Austrian Golf Open.

Spain’s Jon Rahm signed for a 67 to take second place at 12-under followed by his bogey-free compatriot Adri Arnaus (64) in a share of third place at 11-under alongside overnight leader Ross McGowan of England and India’s Shubhankar Sharma (64).

“You didn’t see ten under today because of the firmness of the course,” said Rahm. “As it gets firmer, it is going to be a more demanding golf course obviously, more challenging and a much more fun golf course to play.”

McGowan started well on the back nine with birdies on three of the first four holes. He made two more birdies on the front nine but also bogeyed the par-3 3rd and lost a ball off the tee at the sixth and triple bogeyed for a 70.

Another Spaniard, Rafa Cabrera Bello, produced a bogey-free 65 for a share of sixth place at 10-under alongside Scotland’s Grant Forrest (67) and Frenchman Julien Guerrier (66).
