Australians Jason Day and Marc Leishman took the opening lead in the QBE Shootout, in scramble format for the first round, producing two eagles and twelve birdies to close with a bogey free 16-under.

"I think we combined really well," said Leishman. "I drove it reasonably well most of the day, but when I was off the fairway Jase hit good tee shots, and I was putting first after the first hole and when I missed, he made, so it was -- yeah, I mean, like I said, we combined well. We get along very well and it was just nice to get off to a good start in this sort of event.

LPGA Tour player Lexi Thompson, playing with Bubba Watson, is tied in fourth place at 14-under.

"I think we did great about ham-and-egging it out there," said Thompson. "I made a few birdies on the front and then he came through on the back, hitting on the drivable hole to about 10 feet and then making a 2 on his own ball. That's all great with scramble and just working as a team. It was just a lot of fun. I enjoyed watching him play for the first time in person, so I'm looking forward to the next two days with him."
