The American recovered with three birdies to make the turn in 34 before making bogey and two more birdies to sign for a 69 and a one-shot lead at 14-under.

“So many ups and downs today. Obviously really bad start and proud of the way I fought back there. But still trying to take it all in. There’s just is so much going on there too. Which is a good things I really enjoyed the fans out there.”

Theegala could become the first player to win on a sponsor exemption since Martin Laird at the 2020 Shriners Children’s Open.

Brooks Koepka lies in solo second at 13-under after a 68 followed by fellow Americans Patrick Cantlay (68), Xander Schauffele (69), a bogey-free Talor Gooch (67) and Scottie Scheffler who made seven birdies on the front nine and signed for a flawless 62.

“With the way the wind was blowing it was a good wind for me on the first four holes with it being kind of off the right,” said Scheffler. “But then you turn and you’re playing 14 through 17, with it in off the left is really awkward win for a righty. And so with how firm and fast the greens are, yeah, it was probably some of the best nine holes that I’ve had, just with, I mean, the way the wind direction was. Some of those holes can be pretty awkward.”

American Sam Ryder scored a hole-in-one with a wedge shot at the 124-yard 16th leading to such excitement for the crowd that it caused a 15 minute delay. Unfortunately for Ryder his round also featured a double bogey and several bogeys and he signed for a 71 to tie for 29th place.
