Sweden’s Madelene Sagstrom carded a 9-under 63 to take the first-round lead for the third time in her career on the LPGA Tour in the Cognizant Founders Cup.

The last time she held the lead or co-lead was at the 2021 AIG Women’s Open, where she finished in a tie for second.

The 63, her first bogey-free round of the season, is her best first-round score on Tour beating her previous record by two shots.

“It was one of those days. Like everything was easy. It’s like I was hitting the fairways, hitting the greens, and I was making all the putts. The hole just kept growing. I told my caddie, Shane, I was like, you know, everything feels like tap-ins today. It’s one of those days. You just trying to hold on to momentum and just keep it going.

“Some of first few holes are quite tricky, so just trying to give myself a good chance. There was 90% of air on the tree on 3 too so that worked out well in my favor.”

American Megan Khang, who tied for third at the Palos Verdes Championship presented by Bank of America, tying her career-best finish on Tour, carded a bogey-free 64.

Sagstrom and Khang were two of only six players to record bogey-free scores on Thursday, with Khang carding eight birdies total. Her 64 ties her career-best 18 holes, which she last shot at the 2019 Buick LPGA Shanghai.

“We’re always tweaking everything, always can do better. Every golfer knows it’s a perfectionist sport but a sport you can’t be perfect at,” said Khang. “You got to try your best to get the least amount of mistakes.”

Japan’s Nasa Hataoka, making her fourth appearance in the Founders Cup, sits in solo third after a 7-under 65.

Italy’s Giulia Molinaro, South Korea’s Amy Yang, and Bianca Pagdanganan of the Phillippines are tied in fourth place at 6-under.
