Scottie Scheffler made his first bogey of the tournament at the 17th but his third round 68 was enough to reach 11-under and take the solo lead by two shots.

“I struggled a little bit with the speed of the greens today. It’s tough when the wind gets blowing that hard. Like 18 I’m putting downhill but straight into the wind, and depending on what kind of gust I get, it’s going to move that ball around on the green a lot.

“Most of the back nine I felt like the golf ball was just going forever. I hit it past the pin on 12, past the pin on 13, then 14 was one where it was a similar angle to what I had on 12, and the numbers worked out great to where I was like, if I just hit the same shot, I’ll be really good here, and I pulled it slightly. It may have been couple yards further, and it flew like almost 25 yards past the pin because the wind just died. That’s just stuff that kind of happens out there.

“Then like we get to 16, and that pin in the morning was probably a really easy pin, but then the wind starts blowing 25 and the green gets firm, it’s very hard to actually get it there close to the hole. That’s just one example of how the golf course changes as the day goes on.

“You’re just trying to hit good shots. You can’t do anything about the gusts. Just kind of what happens. You’ve just got to be committed to what you’re doing. Hopefully if I hit enough good shots, I’ll be able to get a few good breaks and some bad ones, as well, and just kind of ride things out.”

A win on Sunday would be Scheffler’s fifth career win, and his fifth since February. The last time player to achieve five wins in a single season was Tom Watson in 1980.

The wind reached 30mph and temperatures climbed into the upper 90s on Saturday and only Brendon Todd and Harold Varner III remained bogey-free.

Todd carded a 65 and moved into a share of second place at 9-under alongside Scott Stallings (70) followed in fourth place at 8-under by Varner who closed with a 68.

John Huh’s own 68 placed him in a share of fifth place at 7-under alongside Chris Kirk (70) and Patrick Reed (71) as well as the only non-American in the top-5, Cameron Davis (69) of Australia.
