Scottie Scheffler carded a bogey-free 66 to retain a two-shot lead at 19-under in the face of fellow American Xander Schauffele’s late charge in the PGA Championship.

“Xander obviously has a great track record around here, but paying attention to what other guys do on the golf course has never served me too well,” said Scheffler.

“To be honest with you, when you’re playing with somebody who is playing good, it’s nice seeing good shots, nice seeing putts go in.

“I feel like I’ve given myself a lot of looks; I’ve kept the ball in position for the most part. Had a couple bad swings off the tee today, but other than that given myself a lot of looks, and yeah, playing good.”

Schauffele started his round six shots behind the lead and closed birdie-birdie-eagle for a 63 to narrow the gap.

Schauffele has had great form at East Lake since he first played in 2017 before Starting Strokes were introduced. Regardless of format he has never shot worse than par in 22 rounds.

“It fits my eye,” said Schauffele, “the greens being really pure. Just kind of have to do everything pretty well, which sort of feeds into how I play. At times it’s okay to be defensive.”

“With ball in hand the first two days it allowed us to be more aggressive if you were in the fairway. That was kind of the mission teeing off on every hole.

“It was nice to pick up some shots late here, but it’s just a positioning battle going into Sunday. I got off to kind of a bad start and saw a bunch of 62s and 63s on the board, so I just tucked my head and got to work.”

Spain’s Jon Rahm also shot 63 to move into third place at 13-under.

“It’s going to take a really strong weekend from me and hopefully not a strong one from Scottie,” he said. “That’s kind of what we’re looking for.”
