Romain Langasque fired a record-tying 11-under 61 to take the opening lead at the Old Course in spite of an early bogey at the 11th.

"I'm so happy, the last three holes were really fun and I made long putts," said the Frenchman.

"I never thought I would have the course record in St Andrews, and I think now my name is going to be on this board. I think it’s something I will remember for rest of my life.

"But it's only the first round, so I'm also going to stay really focused for the next few days."

Langasque and partner Roy Ryu also lead the team competition at 14-under alongside Italy's Andrea Pavan and Kieran McManus.

Fellow Frenchman Frederic Lacroix signed for a bogey-free 62 at Kingsbarns Golf Links followed by another countryman , Antoine Rozner (Old Course), in a share of third place after carding a 63 alongside Dane Niklas Nørgaard Møller (Kingsbarns).

Due to forecast bad weather on Friday, round two of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship will have a shotgun start across St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns.
